New Findings on Prostate Cancer and Obesity

It is possible that obesity plays a factor in cancer recurrence in men who have has prostate cancer surgery. A new study out of Duke University Medical Center found that men who were both obese and diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer were three times more likely to see the cancer spread beyond the prostate than those of their thinner counterparts.

Prostate cancer is most common among older men. It forms in tissues of the prostate gland in the male reproductive system that is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The National Cancer Institute estimates indicate that 217,730 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in 2010 among Americans alone, with 32,050 men losing their lives to the disease.

Recent years have seen an increase in both obesity and prostate cancer. Researchers conducted a study to see if there was a correlation. The evaluation followed 287 patients, who had undergone prostate removal surgery and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). After five years post-op, patients who were obese were three times more likely to have seen the returning cancer spread beyond the prostate.

Dr Christopher Keto, lead author of the study, presented to the American Urological Association's annual conference on Sunday, said: "Over the past decades, there has been increasing prevalence of obesity in the U.S. and Europe, and a high rate of prostate cancer that is the second-most lethal cancer for men."

There is the possibility that the chemical level of androgen deprivation therapy may need to be adjusted for men who are obese. Currently the dosage remains the same, no matter the patient’s weight. He added that more studies will be needed to determine why obese men were more likely to see their cancers progress, even when treatment was the same across the board.

Malaria blocks 'super-infection'

The malaria parasite can ensure it keeps a host body all to itself by preventing further malarial infections, according to international researchers.

The parasite initially reproduces in the liver and moves into the blood.

A study on mice, published in Nature Medicine, showed the parasite can trigger iron deficiency in the liver and therefore prevent more infections.

An expert said the research was "very cool and very interesting", and improved understanding of infection.

The researchers were looking at super-infections, when a patient already infected with malaria is infected with another batch of malaria parasites.

People in high-risk areas can be bitten by up to 700 different malaria-infected mosquitoes each year.

Protecting turf

In experiments on mice, researchers showed that parasites in the blood were able to stimulate the production of the hormone hepcidin, which regulates iron levels.

This reduced the level of iron in the liver, preventing other malaria parasites from reproducing in the organ.

Dr Hal Drakesmith, from the Weatherall Institute at Oxford University, who was part of the Medical Research Council team, said: "Now that we understand how malaria parasites protect their territory in the body from competitor parasites, we may be able to enhance this natural defence mechanism to combat the risk of malaria infections."

Malaria is often accompanied by anaemia, which is treated with iron supplements.

In this study, mice given iron supplements were more susceptible to additional infections.

Dr Drakesmith said: "We may need to look again at the advisability of iron supplementation programmes in malaria-endemic regions, as possible increased risk of infection may need to be weighed against benefits."

Dr Rita Tewari, a malaria researcher at the University of Nottingham, said: "It's very cool and very interesting.

"It tells us a bit more about the mechanism of malaria infection and gives us some sort of tool, this molecule hepcidin, that you can manipulate which can affect infection."

Coffee Consumption May Reduce Certain Breast Cancer Risks

On the heels of new research findings that coffee consumption can reduce the risk of stroke among women by as much as 25 percent, comes a discovery by Swedish researchers that drinking a substantial amount of coffee daily may significantly reduce the risk for developing an aggressive form of breast cancer. The details of their study were recently published in Breast Cancer Research.

Just how much coffee consumption will ward off the cancer? A daily dose of at least five cups will do. The study found that women who drank this daily minimum decreased there chances for developing the non-hormone-responsive disease known as ER-negative breast cancer by as much as 57 percent in comparison to those who enjoyed less than one cup per day.

According to study co-author, Dr. Per Hal, a professor in the medical epidemiology and biostatistics department at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, the daily consumption of coffee may protect against ER-negative, known as the most aggressive type of breast cancer. However, he cautioned, “Now, we don’t have all the details. We don’t know, for example, what specific type of coffee we’re talking about here. But what we do know is that the protective effect is quite striking and remains even after adjusting for a lot of other factors that have the potential to play a protective role. And we know that we’re talking about what we could call a relatively normal amount of coffee drinking. Certainly we’re not talking about consuming gigantic amounts of coffee. So, this is a very intriguing finding.”

For their study, the researchers used questionnaires to assess behavioral and health characteristics of 5,929 Swedish women between 50 and 74 years old, including diet exercise, body mass index, education level, family history of breast cancer, hormone therapy protocols, smoking and drinking habits, and coffee consumption habits. About half of the women had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and both type of breast cancer and tumor status were recorded.

The findings of their analysis showed that among women who consumed at least five cups of coffee per day, the reduction in risk for ER-negative breast cancer ranged from 33 percent to 57 percent in comparison to women who drank less than one cup a day. Although the study indicated that a link exists between coffee consumption and a reduced breast cancer risk, a cause-and-effect relationship was not revealed.

Regarding the results of the analysis, Hal acknowledged, “There are one or two other studies that have pointed in the same direction as ours—but not many, just a few.” He then cautioned, “So before I would go to tell my neighbors to start drinking more coffee than they already do, I would like to know what is the biological mechanism at work here. And that’s not yet clear.” Hal further noted that his research team has begun a new study to investigate what specific chemical in the coffee can cause such a significant decrease in the risk for ER-negative breast cancer.
